What is an XLSM file?

XLSM files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. An XLSM file is a macro-enabled spreadsheet created by Excel spreadsheet processing software. Such a spreadsheet is saved in Open Document Format or Office Open XML format. A single XLSM file serves as a container for one or more XML documents representing worksheets, layout settings, formulae, and spreadsheet metadata. Macros (usually written in Visual Basic for Applications) are also saved in the same XLSM file and used to automate spreadsheet operations within the document. Microsoft introduced XLSM spreadsheets in Excel 2007 and the format is still supported by the latest version of Excel.

How to open XLSM files

You need a suitable software like Excel from Microsoft to open an XLSM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. How to convert XLSM files to XLS, XLSX, ODS, CSV, TXT, PDF, ...

XLSM file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. The XLSM file extension mainly uses a defined XLSM format. The following file formats are most commonly found in XLSM files:

• 90% of all XLSM files are based on the zip format, i.e. an XLSM file contains several compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 11 to 120 files with names like [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \xl\_rels\workbook.xml.rels, \xl\calcChain.xml, \xl\drawings\drawing1.xml, \xl\sharedStrings.xml, \xl\styles.xml, \xl\vbaProject.bin and \xl\workbook.xml. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. XLSM files can be up to 41 MB in size, but are often around 17 KB - 2 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: [Content_Types].xml. Such files are related to form, gstr, covid, finanziamento, calculator, excel, utility, template, master, report and order.
• 5% of all XLSM files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The app name of an XLSM file is Microsoft Excel. The unique Windows component object identifier is 00020820-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 560 KB in size and range from 160 KB to 1 MB.
