What is an XLSX file?

XLSX files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. An XLSX file is a workbook (spreadsheet) saved in Office Open XML (OOXML) format. It is the default format for saving spreadsheets created with current versions of Excel and WPS Spreadsheet. The XLSX spreadsheet is actually a ZIP archive containing XML-encoded worksheets (tables), each with its layout settings, formulae, formatting, embedded objects, images, and other information. Some XLSX files are HTML webpages renamed after they are exported from Excel using the "Save as" feature. Calc, Quattro Pro and other spreadsheet programs support XLSX workbook format.

How to open XLSX files

You need a suitable software like Excel to open an XLSX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XLSX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XLSX file directly in the browser:. How to convert an XLSX file to XLS, XLSX, ODS, CSV, TXT, PDF, ...

1. To do so, click the "Choose your .xlsx file to view" button above.

XLSX file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. XLSX is a very commonly used file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 85% of all XLSX files use ZIP compression, that is, an XLSX file includes multiple compressed files. The average file count is 13 with most XLSX files containing between 10 - 25 compressed files. File names inside are always [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \xl\_rels\workbook.xml.rels, \xl\sharedStrings.xml, \xl\styles.xml, \xl\theme\theme1.xml, \xl\workbook.xml and \xl\worksheets\sheet1.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are 8 KB to 300 KB in size, with a median of 21 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as [Content_Types].xml. Files like these are about list, data, report, book, excel, template, sheet and sample.
• 3% of all XLSX files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). Each XLSX file has an application name, which is Microsoft Excel. The unique Windows component object identifier is 00020820-0000-0000-c000-000000000046 or 00020830-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains several sections with names like EncryptedPackage, DataSpaces and EncryptionInfo. The file size is in the range of 14 KB to 830 KB. These files can be linked to details, payroll and status.

All other XLSX files (12%) have different formats, the following 12 formats exist: Mac2OSX, PDF, XML, UTF-8, HTML, PNG, JFIF, rtfd and QHBK.
