What is an XLSX file?

XLSX files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. An XLSX file is a workbook (spreadsheet) saved in Office Open XML (OOXML) format. It is the default format for saving spreadsheets created with current versions of Excel and WPS Spreadsheet. The XLSX spreadsheet is actually a ZIP archive containing XML-encoded worksheets (tables), each with its layout settings, formulae, formatting, embedded objects, images, and other information. Some XLSX files are HTML webpages renamed after they are exported from Excel using the "Save as" feature. Calc, Quattro Pro and other spreadsheet programs support XLSX workbook format.

How to open XLSX files

You need a suitable software like Excel to open an XLSX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XLSX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XLSX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the XLSX files:
