What is an XM file?

XM files mostly belong to FastTracker 2. XM files are tracker module files that store digital music data, instrument samples, note patterns, and effect commands. They are defined as the extended module file format and were originally made with FastTracker 2.00.
  • Module Data: The file carries instructions for playing back samples, sequencing notes, and adding effects.
  • Audio Encoding: Some XM files use MP3 compression for audio, which is supported by players such as the Extended Module Player. For more details, visit ModPlug.
  • Mobile Tweak Variant: A rare type of XM file is used as a tweak file in the Cydia Substrate environment on iOS. More info is available at Cydia Substrate.
  • FilExt.com note: To open and view an XM file on a PC, use module players or tracker software like FastTracker 2, OpenMPT, MilkyTracker, or XMPlay. These applications let you listen to and inspect the module’s sequences and samples.

    XM file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the XM files:
