XMD format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the XMD files comes to the following conclusion:
The XMD file extension is rarely used and includes very many different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in XMD files:
- 20% of all XMD files use the same file format, which have the signature 32 AE 00 00. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 7 KB in size and range from 390 bytes to 39 KB. A common filename is Characs.xmd or GameState.xmd. These files are attributed to state, game, inventory and item.
- 10% of all XMD files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 230 bytes to 9 KB. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, http and xmlns.
All the rest of the XMD files (70%) have different formats, often, for example, BitDefender plug-in, MOS and CLOSERS. These files are often connected to meta, motion, emotion or rare. Just click the "Choose your .xmd file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your XMD file is.

How to solve problems with XMD files
- Associate the XMD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest XMD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Gamebryo Engine update.
- To make sure that your XMD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
