Opening an XML File
The XML file type is primarily associated with Notepad.
What is an XML file
<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""UTF-8""?>
<Book>
<Title>The Sixty Dolphins</Title>
<Author>John Doe</Author>
</Book>
Such documents may contain any Unicode character. Many web servers and clients transfer data in XML format using application/xml or text/xml MIME type. Different flavors of XML format are used to store documents, program settings, as well as Final Cut video projects and Media Player playlists (WPL).
How to open XML files
You need a suitable software like Notepad to open an XML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XML file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XML file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the XML files comes to the following conclusion:
XML is a very commonly used file extension and contains well-defined data in an established structure that can be read by various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in XML files:
- 65% of all XML files belong to Generic XML. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are 350 bytes to 380 KB in size, with a median of 8 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The keywords xmlns, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> and http are typical for these files. Such files are related to config, data, content, manifest, context, android, report and document.
- 7% of all XML files have the same signature 03 00 08 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 400 bytes to 14 KB. The file name AndroidManifest.xml is typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to material, menu, paths, activity, password and dialog.
All the rest of the XML files (28%) have different formats, the following 22 formats can be found: XML, UTF-16 (LE), ZIP, JPG, GZIP, JSON, Fsd, xpacket, sGcAfLoBPhx and CryXmlB. Tagged as settings, list, types, backup, preferences or history. If you want to find out which format your XML file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xml file to view".

an xml document is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XML files
- Associate the XML file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open documents. Because only the current version supports the latest XML file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Notepad update.
- To make sure that your XML file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XML file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
