What is an XPI file?
How can I open an XPI file?
You need a suitable software like Firefox from Mozilla to open an XPI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XPI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XPI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XPI file format:
To find out what program is needed to open XPI files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the XPI files is as follows:
XPI is a very common file type and mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in XPI files:
- 98% of all XPI files use ZIP compression, that is, an XPI file includes multiple compressed files. The average file count is 35 with most XPI files containing between 8 - 160 compressed files. Common included file names are manifest.json, \META-INF\cose.manifest, \META-INF\cose.sig, \META-INF\manifest.mf, \META-INF\mozilla.rsa and \META-INF\mozilla.sf. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are 19 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 250 KB. Files like these are about firefox, download, kbplugin, importexporttools, addon, bypass, paywalls and direct.
- 1% of all XPI files start with the bytes 00 00 00 00 50 4B 01 02 14 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 3 KB to 7 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. chrome.manifestPK, install.rdfPK and icon.pngPK. An example of a file name is -972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd-.xpi.
The remaining 1% of all XPI files are files with no common format. The category is mozilla, video, search, extension, serpclix or jetpack. Just click the "Choose your .xpi file to view" button on this page to find out what your XPI file is.

How to solve problems with XPI files
- Associate the XPI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open extension/add-ons. Because only the current version supports the latest XPI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Mozilla manufacturer website after an available Firefox update.
- To make sure that your XPI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XPI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
