What is an XPI file?

XPI files mostly belong to Firefox by Mozilla. An XPI file is a Firefox Internet browser plugin. The file is saved as a ZIP archive containing HTML markup, stylesheets (CSS), JavaScript (JS) code, PNG icons, a README.md documentation file, and metadata saved in a JSON file. Firefox typically installs an XPI extension (also called an add-on or plugin) and deletes the file afterwards. However, users can manually install an XPI package from the "Install Add-on From File" option in the "Add-ons and Themes" menu. Apart from XPI, Firefox add-ons can also have JAR and ZIP filename extension. Regardless of the filename extension, all such add-ons are ZIP archives.

How can I open an XPI file?

You need a suitable software like Firefox from Mozilla to open an XPI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XPI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XPI file directly in the browser:. • 98% of all XPI files use ZIP compression, that is, an XPI file includes multiple compressed files. The average file count is 35 with most XPI files containing between 8 - 160 compressed files. Common included file names are manifest.json, \META-INF\cose.manifest, \META-INF\cose.sig, \META-INF\manifest.mf, \META-INF\mozilla.rsa and \META-INF\mozilla.sf. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are 19 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 250 KB. Files like these are about firefox, download, kbplugin, importexporttools, addon, bypass, paywalls and direct.
• 1% of all XPI files start with the bytes 00 00 00 00 50 4B 01 02 14 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 3 KB to 7 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. chrome.manifestPK, install.rdfPK and icon.pngPK.
