What is a YUV file?

YUV files mostly belong to MPlayer by Mplayer Team. YUV is an uncompressed video and image file format that specifies the ratio between the Y (brightness), the U (blue projection), and the V (red projection) components per pixel in a color pipeline. The YUV format is a PAL composite color video standard for encoding color images and videos in a black and white TV architecture. A YUV file contains a sequential collection of the YUV frames in a video, the video stream, and metadata or an image file encoded with the YUV model. The Y component of a YUV file defines the brightness (luma) of the video, whereas U and V are color components and they are used to encode the color of still images and video during compression and transmission. Video and digital photography systems that use YCbCr encoding for color image and video pipelines are generally based on the YUV model.

How to open a YUV file

You need a suitable software like MPlayer to open a YUV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
