Opening HP Files
The HP file type is primarily associated with HPGL Viewer.
What is an HP file?
HP files are most often used to store HPGL/2 commands. These files hold vector drawing instructions used by HP plotters and printers for technical drawings.
Main Uses:
Functionality:
The file contains plain text commands that tell a plotter how to move a pen to form lines, curves, and shapes. Some versions use JSON format to store game data. Users can open these files with a specialized viewer or even a text editor to inspect the commands. For more information or viewing tools, visit the official HP website or check out HPGL Viewer.
FilExt.com note: If you have a HP file, using an HPGL Viewer or converting the file (for example, to SVG) may help you better see what the file contains.
How can I open an HP file?
You need a suitable software like HPGL Viewer to open an HP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

HP file format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the HP files looks like this:
The HP file extension does not have a uniform file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 15% of all HP files use the same file format, which have the signature 1B 2E. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are 5 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 260 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. .@1536;2, .I512;;17 and .T3072;;.
- 10% of all HP files use the same file format, which have the signature IN. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. HP files can be up to 360 KB in size, but are often around 22 KB - 250 KB.
All other HP files (75%) have different formats, frequently e.g. JSON and HPHP. These files sometimes refer to tfevents, events or pink. If you want to find out what your HP file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
