Opening a 7Z File
The 7Z file type is primarily associated with 7-Zip.
What is a 7Z file?

Compression: The default compression method for a 7Z file is LZMA which stands for the Lempel–Ziv–Markov chain algorithm. It allows lossless data compression with a high compression ratio. The algorithm's speed is comparable to other common compression algorithms. The 7Z format has support for multi-volume archives. This allows users to compress a file in separate segments which can be re-assembled to obtain the original file. It does not, however, allow segments to be decompressed separately; all segments are decompressed together. 7Z also allows files with Unicode names. 7Z files support AES-256 encryption for additional security. The 7Z format is among the more popular file compression formats and is supported by most common file compression software including WinRAR, PowerArchiver, TUGZip, and IZArc.
How to open 7Z files
You need a suitable software like 7-Zip to open a 7Z file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your 7Z file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a 7Z file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert 7Z files:
- 7-Zip by Igor Pavlov
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. 7Z files are often referred to as 7-Zip compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- PeaZip (compressed archive file) by PeaZipPeaZip is a free compressing and decompressing program developed by Giorgio Tani. It supports several compression extensions, with a special feature of handling open-formats. Other than archiving and extracting PeaZip also allows the user to change the type of file, set size limits and encrypt data. PeaZip is available on Windows, Linux and BSD. PeaZip uses the 7Z extension for its compressed files. This file format is classified as Compressed. Related links: PeaZip Wikipedia Page, PeaZip
- WinRAR (compressed archive file) by WinRarWinRAR is a file archiving program that compresses files and groups them into one single archive. It supports all popular compression formats and encrypts archives with 256 bit of password encryption. WinRAR is able to compress executable, multimedia and library files with efficiency. WinRAR can decompress the 7Z format and use it to archive data. This file format is classified as Compressed. Related links: WinRAR Wikipedia Page
7Z file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the 7Z files comes to the following conclusion:
7Z is a very widely used file extension. The file type uses a standardized format supported by many programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in 7Z files:
- 96% of all 7Z files are 7-Zip compressed archive files, which are using the popular 7z file format. 7z is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression, encryption and pre-processing algorithms. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 12 MB in size and range from 18 KB to 430 MB. It is a modern file type. Files like these are sometimes connected to arkhiv, klass, iazyku, angliiskomu, pokemon, mario, super and data.
- 1% of all 7Z files internally use the ZIP format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one 7Z file. Primarily 1 to 30 files are included. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. A typical file size is 530 KB.
All other 7Z files (3%) have no uniform format, often e.g. RAR. They are often associated with chrome, pack, free, microsoft, windows, demonstratsionnyi or variant. You can get all the details of your 7Z file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .7z file to view" above.

How to solve problems with 7Z files
- Associate the 7Z file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest 7Z file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Igor Pavlov manufacturer website after an available 7-Zip update.
- To make sure that your 7Z file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .7Z file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
