What is an AMR file?

AMR files mostly belong to QuickTime by Apple. AMR filename extension is mainly associated with audio files encoded using Adaptive Multi-Rate audio compression format and codec. AMR compression is optimized for speech coding. It uses discontinued transmission, voice activity detection, and comfort noise generation technology to reduce bandwidth usage during periods of silence. This has made AMR the preferred format for many audio recording and voice call applications. AMR takes a hybrid approach to encoding data; It encodes both speech parameters and a waveform signal. Another technique that AMR uses to reduce bandwidth usage involves switching bit rates on the fly depending on network conditions. Some applications appear to use SILK audio codec to compress AMR files. Adaptive Multi-Rate-encoded files typically have AMR or 3GA filename extension. BrainVoyager EEG/MEG imaging and analysis software, saves stacks of anatomical slices in AMR files. Such AMR files usually contain coplanar (inplane) data.

How to open an AMR file

You need a suitable software like QuickTime to open an AMR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 3 MB to 42 MB in size, with a median of 12 MB. The keywords ftypmp42, isommp42 and {free are typical for these files. The file name FILE_20180601.amr is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to audio.
