Opening a BOOK File
The BOOK file type is primarily associated with FrameMaker.
What is a BOOK file?
- Main Use: BookSmart is an application distributed under a freeware license that is used for generating books either manually or with the help of the inbuilt assistant. When a book is created using the software, the application automatically creates a BOOK file for storing the contents. These books can be of various kinds such as wedding album, guestbook, notebook, and yearbook and can also contain customized borders and page backgrounds. BOOK file can also be backed up or shared by exporting it as a BOOKEXPORT file.
- Other Uses: Adobe Framemaker software also uses BOOK file format for storing references made to FM and MIF FrameMaker document files. These BOOK files consist of chapter titles, appendices and are useful in the compilation of several smaller documents into a book. Budget in Brief is another program that uses BOOK files to save budget documents in XML format. These BOOK files consist of document properties that refer to input budget files and the output document templates. Apple's iBooks Author software also uses BOOK files to store iBook designs.

BOOK file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the BOOK files is as follows:
The BOOK file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all BOOK files are associated with FrameMaker book. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 8 KB to 130 KB in size, with a median of 50 KB. The keywords BookFile are typical for these files.
- 15% of all BOOK files internally utilize the Flash file format. A ShockWave Flash file contains an outdated Macromedia/Adobe Flash Player compressed movie. Adobe strongly recommends all users immediately uninstall the Flash Player to help protect their systems. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 220 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 650 KB. The file name p01-03.book is typical for these files.
All the rest of the BOOK files (65%) have different formats, often, for example, XML. If you want to find out which format your BOOK file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .book file to analyze".
