All about CAB Files
The CAB file type is primarily associated with Windows Installer.
What is a CAB file?
How to open CAB files
You need a suitable software like Windows Installer to open a CAB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CAB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CAB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CAB files:
- Windows Installer by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CAB files are often referred to as Windows Installer compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- InstallShield (compressed archive) by FlexeraInstallShield is a Windows application used to create a program installer package for Windows operating system. It saves an installer package's archive in a CAB file. This file format is classified as Compressed. Related links: CAB Format
CAB format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the CAB files:
The CAB extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a defined CAB format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all CAB files are Microsoft Cabinet Archive files, which are using the popular CAP file format. CAP files are compressed archives. The first bytes (the signature) are 'MSCF' (short for MicroSoft Cabinet File). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 9 KB to 24 MB in size. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MSCF. Such CAB files store data about data, windows, latest, configuration, network, package, backup and compdb.
- 20% of all CAB files belong to InstallShield compressed Archive. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 1 MB. The keywords ISc( are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are data1.cab or data2.cab.
All other CAB files (10%) have no uniform format. Often described as desktop, found, express, xact, incredi, neutral, persist, swflash, engine, office, sector, xinput, logs or mail. Just click the "Choose your .cab file to view" button on this page to find out what your CAB file is.

a cab compressed archive is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CAB files
- Associate the CAB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archives. Because only the current version supports the latest CAB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Windows Installer update.
- To make sure that your CAB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CAB file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
