Opening a CLM File
The CLM file type is primarily associated with EnergyPlus.
What is a CLM file?
For example, one type contains climate data used by EnergyPlus. These files hold weather and simulation parameters for building energy models. You can learn more on the EnergyPlus website.
Another type of CLM is a health insurance claim file. These are used in medical claim processing systems, such as those supporting EZClaim, to store and manage claim data.
Some CLM files are used in gaming. They act as level maps and may be built on a .NET internal structure. Examples include level files associated with titles from Clash of Magic or Crazy Machines Lab.
In addition, there are CLM files that hold elevation or climate model data for geographic applications. ArcGIS Pro uses these files to manage terrain and model data; more details can be found on the ArcGIS Pro resources page.
How do you open CLM files?
You need a suitable software like EnergyPlus to open a CLM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CLM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CLM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CLM file format details:
To view or edit CLM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the CLM files:
CLM is rarely used as a file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 35% of all CLM files start with the bytes *CLIMATE # ascii climate file from , which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are 180 KB to 190 KB in size, with a median of 190 KB. The file type is relatively new. The keywords *CLIMATE, EPW_Output, ascii climate, defined in, file from, TMYx, # col 1: Diffuse solar on the horizontal (W/m**2), col 2 and External are typical for these files. The following filename is common: MOZ_IN_Xai.Xai.AP.673350_TMYx.2003-2017.clm. Such files sometimes refer to tmyx, intl and inmet.
- 15% of all CLM files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "ISA*0" at the beginning. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. Most of these files are 1 KB to 130 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as 005010X222A1 and 043387530. download.clm is a typical file name.
The remaining 50% of all CLM files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. .NET. These files are often connected to prec. If you want to find out what your CLM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for CLM File Extension

a clm data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CLM files
- Associate the CLM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest CLM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available EnergyPlus update.
- To make sure that your CLM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CLM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
