What is a COF file?

COF files mostly belong to MPLAB X by Microchip. A COF file is an executable object created by MPLAB X integrated development environment and saved in Common Object File Format (COFF). This file contains machine code and symbolic debugging information generated by the ALN Linker component and run on an embedded device. COF is also the filename extension of a conversion setup (device information, file names, device properties etc.) file used by Quartus II FGPA and CPLD development environment. Another type of CA file is a container order used by CA Client Automation tool. AutoCAD computer-aided design software uses a COF file to store various CAD data.

How to open a COF file

You need a suitable software like MPLAB X to open a COF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
