What is a CP file?

CP files mostly belong to Xcode by Apple. A CP file contains source code written in C++ programming language using Xcode integrated development environment. Most development tools save C++ source code in CPP files but Xcode uses CP filename extension. Another type of CP file is a project created with Captivate e-learning material authoring software. This project file contains slides, screen recordings, and settings saved in Open Document format. Captivate version 5 replaced CP documents with CPTX files. Audition digital audio production program uses a CP script to automate processes.

How to open CP files

You need a suitable software like Xcode to open a CP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CP file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the CP files comes to the following conclusion:

The CP file extension is not found very often and is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all CP files save the data in Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. CP files can be up to 7 KB in size, but are often around 310 bytes - 2 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. using namespace std;, #include<iostream> and int main() {. Files like these have the following tags: labs.
• 15% of all CP files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. CP files are between 2 MB and 78 MB in size.
