All about CPE Files
The CPE file type is primarily associated with Motorola CPS.
What is a CPE file?
Fax Cover Page: Some CPE files contain fax cover page data. They hold sender and recipient details and are managed with a FAX Cover Page Editor. More details are available at FormDocs.
Encrypted PDF Document: In other cases, the file is an encrypted PDF (with a PDF internal format) that requires decryption. Open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and the proper password. Visit Adobe Acrobat Reader DC for instructions.
- Motorola Radio Codeplug: Used for radio configuration. It keeps device settings and requires specific CPS software. See Motorola for more.
- Fax Cover Page: Holds fax header information. It is designed for fax transmission.
- Encrypted PDF Document: Contains secured PDF data. Open with a PDF reader after decryption.
FilExt.com tip: Choose the software that matches the file's origin to view and modify its contents.
How to open a CPE file
You need a suitable software like Motorola CPS to open a CPE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CPE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CPE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CPE file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the CPE files comes to the following conclusion:
CPE is not a common file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all CPE files start with the bytes CP crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 2 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as CPDFile and EXT?. Files like these have the following tags: issi, austria, cloud and point.
- 10% of all CPE files are Windows FAX cover files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 16 KB in size and range from 4 KB to 110 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: EMF and FAXCOVER-VER005w.
The remaining 60% of all CPE files are files with no common format, often, for example, PDF and XML. Sometimes used for archivo, bajar, exegenbajar, general or course. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your CPE file!

How to solve problems with CPE files
- Associate the CPE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest CPE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Motorola CPS update.
- To make sure that your CPE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CPE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
