What is a CSR file?

CSR files mostly belong to OpenSSL. Certificate Signing Request (CSR) files are encoded text files used to request a digital certificate. They carry encrypted data such as a public key and identifying details.

Purpose: Contains the information a certificate authority uses to issue an SSL certificate.

Process: Generated with cryptographic utilities like OpenSSL, these files encode data in Base64.

Content Structure: Typically begins with -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST----- and ends with a corresponding footer.

Alternate Use: In rare cases, certain devices (e.g., some Casio models) may use the CSR extension for different data types.

How do you open CSR files?

You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a CSR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
