All about CUBE Files
The CUBE file type is primarily associated with cubegen.
What is a CUBE file?
- Use: CUBE files are used to describe volumetric information and also the information relating to the spatial positions of atoms. CUBE files can be generated using the cubman and cubegen utilities that are packaged as a part of Gaussian software. These software can be installed on Windows, macOS, and Linux-based machines thus enabling the opening of CUBE files.
- Features: The entire data of the CUBE file consists of a header followed by the volumetric information and is stored in an easily readable text format. The first two lines of the header in the CUBE files contain comments that are generally ignored by parsing applications or used as two default labels. The third line contains the number of atoms information followed by the position of the beginning of volumetric information. The three lines that follow denote the number of voxels along each of the three axes and the axis vector. The header's last section contains five numbers in five lines dedicated to atom number, charge, and the x,y,z coordinates of the center of the atom. Following the header information, the volumetric data is denoted using a floating-point format for each volumetric element.
How do you open CUBE files?
You need a suitable software like cubegen to open a CUBE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CUBE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CUBE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CUBE files:
- cubegen by Gaussian
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CUBE files are often referred to as cubegen data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Avogadro (Gaussian cube file) by Avogadro ChemistryAvogardo is a free and open-source software for molecular modelling and computational chemistry. Avogadro can visualize CUBE files created using the cubegen uility from Gaussian. CUBE files store chemical data in the form of X-, Y-, and Z- coordinates mapped onto a 3D grid. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Avogadro Repository, Avogadro on Wikipedia, Avogadro Manual, Visualizing CUBE Files in Avogadro
- PictureMaker (bitmap image) by CubicompPictureMaker was a 3D animation software in the 1980s. It was part of a system of graphics hardware and software by the same name. The CUBI format is associated with a bitmap image used by PictureMaker. This file format is classified as Raster Image. CUBE file format:
To find out what program is needed to open CUBE files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the CUBE files:
The CUBE file extension is very common and mainly uses a defined CUBE format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all CUBE files are Color grading data files. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The average file size is 950 KB with most files being between 610 KB and 5 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as LUT_3D_SIZE 33 and TITLE "Generated by Resolve". These files are often associated with preset, luts, adanmq, film, teal, advantix, color and orange.
- 20% of all CUBE files belong to Cube LUT format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 210 KB to 7 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SIZE, Adobe Lightroom, Color profile, Copyright, Created by Adobe Lightroom plugin Export LUT, plugin Export, # www.johnrellis.com/lightroom/exportlut.htm and IWLTBAP. Files like these are about standard, adobe, animals, kodak, fuji and iwltbap.
All other CUBE files (10%) have different formats, such as Mac2OSX, GZIP, UnityFS, XML, CUBE, GAUSSIAN and Quickstep. These files sometimes refer to cine, dlog, mavic, debarup, fuji or vintage. If you want to find out which format your CUBE file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .cube file to view".
Technical Data for CUBE File Extension

a cube Gaussian cube file is a special file format by Gaussian and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CUBE files
- Associate the CUBE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open gaussian cube files. Because only the current version supports the latest CUBE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Gaussian manufacturer website after an available cubegen update.
- To make sure that your CUBE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CUBE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
