What is a DCM file?

DCM files mostly belong to Photoshop by Adobe. A DCM file usually contains a 2D or 3D image saved in DICOM raster image format. This DCM file is used to store and distribute medical images such as those from ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans. Additional information such as patient's information can also be embedded alongside the image in the same file. Pixel data stored in this DCM file may be compressed in various formats including RLE, ZIP, and lossless/lossy JPEG. DCM is also the filename extension of a component library file used by kiCad electronic schematic design and automation software. 3D Slicer biomedical imaging program saves geometry data in a DCM file. Address book data and machine settings used by Canon's imageRUNNER multifunction digital copiers, can be exported as a device configuration information file that has DCM filename extension. DiskCatalogMaker disk management program saves its catalog database in a DCM file.

How to open DCM files

You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open a DCM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DCM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DCM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DCM file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the DCM files produces the following result:

The DCM extension is very commonly used. This DCM file itself is among the most popular common file types and primarily uses a special format that can be read by various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other DCM files (5%) have no uniform format, the following 5 formats can be found: KiCad Documentation and GZIP. They are often associated with scan, upper, contrast, dicomdir, xray, preparation, puthukudi, josedith, sreejith, forearm, mrbrain, patient, kumaya, sample, alcal, slice or bite. You can get all the details of your DCM file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .dcm file to view this image" above.

How to solve problems with DCM files

  • Associate the DCM file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest DCM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Photoshop update.
  • To make sure that your DCM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DCM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
