What is a DEB file

DEB files mostly belong to dpkg by The Debian Project. DEB is an extension used to label software packages for the Debian Linux distribution and its derivatives. Debian packages usually contain all of the data required to install a group of related commands or features. DEB packages in their current form are ar archives and usually contain three types of files:

  • Debian-binary: contains the the package format version number.
  • Control archive: a TAR file with the label 'control.tar' which contains executables including preinst and postinst scripts, other package meta-information such as a brief description of the package, MD5 checksums, configuration files, man/info pages, copyright information, etc.
  • Data archive: a TAR file with the label 'data.tar' that contains installable files.

Other features:

  • Nomenclature: Debian packages follow a standard file naming convention: <packagename>_<VersionNumber>_<DebianRevisionNumber>_<DebianArchitecture>.deb
  • Security: Debian packages can be signed with the GNU Privacy Guard, and support checksums to verify their authenticity.
  • Adoption: DEB packages are standard across a variety of different Unix and Unix-like operating systems including Ubuntu, Fink, Nexenta, etc.

How can I open a DEB file?

You need a suitable software like dpkg to open a DEB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DEB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DEB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DEB files:

  1. dpkg by The Debian Project
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DEB files are often referred to as dpkg compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. debug (DOS debug script) by Microsoft
debug is a command-line tool for MS-DOS, OS/2 and Microsoft Windows that acts as an assembler, disassembler, or hex dump program. debug was written by Tim Paterson to help him develop QDOS. debug enables the debugging of memory contents in assembly language, hexadecimal or ASCII, to make changes, and selectively execute COM, EXE and other file types. This file format is classified as Executable. Related links: debug Wikipedia Page, A Guide to debug

DEB file format:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the DEB files comes to the following conclusion:

The DEB file extension is used very often and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other DEB files (2%) have no uniform format. Often described as latest, linux, chrome, steam, code or nsepa. Just click the "Choose your .deb file to view" button on this page to find out what your DEB file is.

How to solve problems with DEB files

  • Associate the DEB file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open package files. Because only the current version supports the latest DEB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the The Debian Project manufacturer website after an available dpkg update.
  • To make sure that your DEB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DEB file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
