What is a DFU file?

DFU files mostly belong to dfu-util by dfu-util Maintainers. A DFU file is a Universal Serial Bus (USB) device driver saved in the format defined by the USB Device Firmware Upgrade Standard. Hardware manufacturers and projects such as STMicroelectronics as well as Openmoko and OpenPCD projects have implemented device DFU device upgrade formats for their USB devices. dfu-util is a cross-platform desktop application for flashing a DFU firmware upgrade to supported devices.

How do you open DFU files?

You need a suitable software like dfu-util to open a DFU file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DFU file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DFU file directly in the browser:. DFU file format details:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DFU files looks like this:

Files with the DFU extension are quite widely used. This file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 50% of all DFU files belong to ST Device Firmware Upgrade. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 41 KB and 850 KB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The files contain the following words: DfuSe and Target. The file name firmware.dfu is characteristic of these files. These files are often associated with flipper, release, quasar, deviation, duckypad, reader, avra, evox, jmix and rfid.
• 15% of all DFU files belong to Cambridge Silicon Radio Device Firmware Update. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 1 MB. The keywords CSR-dfu2 are typical for these files. An example of a file name is Jabra_Evolve_75-v2.38.0-US_EN-default.dfu or Jabra_Link_370-v1.87.0-US_EN-link370.dfu. Such files sometimes refer to jabra, charge, english, link, evolve and factory.

All other DFU files (35%) have no consistent format, the following 8 formats can be found: Apple Img3 encrypted signed container, HackRF firmware, Apple 8900 encrypted signed container, ZIP and Power. These files are often connected to studio, polycom, update, athrbt, ibec or plus.
