What is a DSS file?

DSS files mostly belong to DSS Player by Olympus. A DSS file usually contains a dictation or voice recording captured by digital dictation recorders manufactured by Olympus. The DSS recording is stored in Digital Speech Standard file format which is optimized for speech coding. Despite its high compression rate, DSS format outputs high quality audio. The reduced file size resulting from a highly compressed DSS file translates to lower storage and bandwidth requirements. DSS audio format is used in law enforcement, medical, journalism, and academic sectors. DiskStation Manager, a cloud-based OS bundled with network attached storage (NAS) devices (like DiskStation) saves its backup configuration in a DSS file. Settings saved in this file include domains, passwords, allowed file transfer protocols, user/group preferences etc. Another type of DSS file contains a database used by HEC-DSS data storage system. Saved game data used by Action Replay game cheat modules are also stored in a DSS file.

How do you open DSS files?

You need a suitable software like DSS Player to open a DSS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
