What is a DZI file?

DZI files mostly belong to Deep Zoom Composer. Deep Zoom Image (DZI) files are XML-based descriptor files that define how a large image is split into smaller, zoomable tiles.
These files list the grid structure, levels of detail, and tile size so that a viewer can load only the visible parts of a high-resolution image.

How to open DZI files

You need a suitable software like Deep Zoom Composer to open a DZI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. The DZI file extension is rather rarely used and mainly uses a defined DZI format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 70% of all DZI files are Deep Zoom Image files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 170 bytes to 200 bytes in size. The file type was created recently. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Height, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, Width, <Image xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/deepzoom/2008", <Size, Overlap="1", Format="jpeg" and TileSize="254". Such DZI files store data about zoom, image and helloworld.
• 10% of all DZI files start with the bytes 00 00 00 2A crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 290 MB with most files being between 290 MB and 300 MB in size. A usual file name is LIBRARY2.DZI or Library3.dzi.
