What is an EBP file?

EBP files mostly belong to EarthBound Patcher. EBP files are project files that store data for various specialized applications. They are not a single standardized format; instead, the file’s internal structure depends on the software that created it.

EarthBound ROM Patch: Some EBP files serve as patch files for the EarthBound game. These files work with the EarthBound Patcher to modify the game data.

Sports Playbook: A number of EBP files contain basketball play strategies. They may originate from tools like Easy Basketball Playbook or Playbook Wizard.

How to open an EBP file

You need a suitable software like EarthBound Patcher to open an EBP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the EBP files looks like this:

EBP is not a commonly used file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 20% of all EBP files are Express Burn Project files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 270 bytes to 71 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0"?><ExpressBurnProject, ExpressBurnProject type, AlbumTitle, Audiotrack artist, TrackList, file, AlbumArtist, CD-TEXT, Users and true.
• 20% of all EBP files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "PATCH" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 2 MB with most files being between 2 MB and 4 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. PATCH. Examples of file names are M2DX_1.45.ebp or UNDERTALE_SNES_Alpha.ebp. These files are often associated with undertale, alpha, snes, maternal, bound and redux.
