Opening ECS Files
The ECS file type is primarily associated with WinZip.
What is an ECS file?
- Primary Use: ECS files are primarily used by GIS or Geographic Information System applications to compress and store geographical features as vectors by recognizing those features as geometrical shapes.
- Other Uses: This format was also used to compress and store large files such as multimedia audio, video, and images on Sony Ericsson mobile phones. The data of these phones were backed up as an ECS file so it could be more easily transferred through email.
- Conversion: For accessing data stored by Symbian, the ECS files can be opened on computers running Microsoft Windows by simply replacing the ECS extension with ZIP. The data on the new ZIP file can be extracted using any popular ZIP decompression application. Users can then find the stored data by checking the filestore.dat file which will be created upon successful decompression.
How to open an ECS file
You need a suitable software like WinZip to open an ECS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ECS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ECS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to solve problems with ECS files
- Associate the ECS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open backup files. Because only the current version supports the latest ECS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available WinZip update.
- To make sure that your ECS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ECS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
