Opening an ENF File
The ENF file type is primarily associated with EndNote.
What is an ENF file?
For many, an ENF file is an EndNote Filter file. This file defines how bibliographic data is imported into EndNote. It contains rules that help the software convert raw citation data into a format that the EndNote library understands. You can manage these files using EndNote’s filter manager (EndNote).
Another type of ENF file is a Nexus Experiment file. These files hold data for a motion analysis project, used by systems like Vicon Nexus. They store details for processing motion capture data. To open such files, you must use the motion analysis tool provided by Vicon (Vicon Nexus).
How to open ENF files
You need a suitable software like EndNote to open an ENF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ENF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ENF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ENF files:
- EndNote
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ENF files are often referred to as EndNote data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- EndNote Filter File
- RightClick-Encrypt File
- SmartScore (Score) by MUSITEK CorporationENF = Extended Notation Format. SmartScore scans music into your PC and plays it back. It will allow you to playback, transpose, and print entire scores or individual parts. This is the equivalent of "optical character recognition (OCR)" for music.
ENF file extension format:
To view or edit ENF files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the ENF files:
The ENF file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in ENF files:
- 35% of all ENF files are EndNote Filter files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 7 KB to 220 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ENF, PiaL, PiaR, PianoL, PianoR, Electric Piano, Iscor and ElPiano. A usual file name is dtn001.enf. Such ENF files store data about person-related data.
- 35% of all ENF files use the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 50 bytes and 280 bytes in size. The files contain the following words: [Node Information], CREATIONDATEANDTIME, HASCHILD, NAME, SESSION, SUBJECT, SUBJECTS, TYPE=TRIAL and [TRIAL_INFO]. These files can be linked to patient, take, trial, session, scene and classification, and frequently comprise personal data.
The remaining 30% of all ENF files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. NDNEEL. Files like these are sometimes linked to student. If you want to find out what your ENF file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with ENF files
- Associate the ENF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open specialized data files. Because only the current version supports the latest ENF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available EndNote update.
- To make sure that your ENF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ENF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
