Opening an ESX File
The ESX file type is primarily associated with Xactimate.
What is an ESX file
- Main Use: Xactware's Xactimate software is used in the generation of insurance claims. The software uses an ESX file to save insurance claim-related information. This can include necessary insurance policy-related information such as the age of the insurance policy, the premium paid by the person taking the policy, the maturity value of the policy, damages, deductibles, and other benefits associated with the policy. Each insurance policy is stored in a separate ESX file and becomes necessary during the filing and settlement of insurance claims. The data in an ESX file is stored in a ZIP compressed format. In order to open ESX files, it is necessary to have the Xactimate software installed on a compatible device. Xactimate desktop software is compatible with Microsoft Windows, but not macOS and Linux operating systems. The mobile version of the software can be installed on Android and iOS devices. There is also a web-based version of the software, which runs best on the latest versions of the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.
- Other Uses: ESX file type is also found in Escape, a video game developed by Tom Murphy. It is a puzzle-based game that can be installed on Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and Linux operations systems. The game uses ESX files to save the data corresponding to different levels associated with it.
How can I open an ESX file?
You need a suitable software like Xactimate to open an ESX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ESX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ESX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ESX files:
- Xactimate by Xactware
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ESX files are often referred to as Xactimate compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Escape (level data) by Tom Murphy VIIEscape was a puzzle game in the tradition of Adventures of Lolo or Chip's Challenge. The game is now obsolete and the links to the game webpage and author's site are no longer functional. This file format is classified as Game.
ESX format details:
To view or edit ESX files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the ESX files looks like this:
The ESX file ending mainly uses a defined ESX format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 90% of all ESX files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one ESX file. The 1 to 130 compressed files are called 1.JPG and XACTDOC.ZIPXML. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are on average 330 KB in size and range from 28 KB to 8 MB. Files like these are about survey, floor, coopersmith, first, predictive, ssmith, fire, sllc and wifi, and nearly always contain personal information.
- 2% of all ESX files save the data in XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The file size is in the range of 2 KB to 58 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0", UTF-8 and encoding.
The remaining 8% of all ESX files are files with no common format. Tagged as warehouse, building, planning, layout, harty, recon, sand or site. If you want to find out which format your ESX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .esx file to analyze".
