What is a GGB file?

GGB files mostly belong to GeoGebra by GeoGebra. GGB file extension is used to store data associated with the GeoGebra application first created by Markus Hohenwarter.

Each GGB worksheet usually contains three key files; the geogebra.xml XML file which defines the structure and contents of the document, the geogebra.js JS file that takes care of the worksheet's JavaScript interactivity functions, and the geogebra_thumnail.png PNG preview image file. All the images that are used in the worksheet are separately saved in the "images" subfolder of the associated GGB archive.

How to open GGB files

You need a suitable software like GeoGebra from GeoGebra to open a GGB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the GGB files:

The GGB file extension is not common and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 98% of all GGB files use ZIP compression, so several files are compressed and saved in one GGB file. The number of files included is on average 5 and ranges from 3 to 5. Common included file names are geogebra_defaults2d.xml, geogebra_defaults3d.xml, geogebra_javascript.js, geogebra_thumbnail.png and geogebra.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. GGB files are between 5 KB and 84 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as geogebra_defaults2d.xml and geogebra_thumbnail.png. Some examples of file names are geogebra-export.ggb. Files like these are sometimes connected to material.
