Opening a GML File
The GML file type is primarily associated with Graph Editor.
What is a GML file?
- Main Use: GameMaker is a software application that is useful in the creation of computer video games. GameMaker uses the GML file to store program code written using the GameMaker Language (GML). This code in the GML files can be executed using the GameMaker interpreter for the purpose of creating game scripts, functions, or modules.
- Other Uses: GML can also stand for Geography Markup Language File developed by Galdos systems. It is used as a geography data format supported by the Open Geospatial Consortium. The format is used by geographers for saving geographical information in a standard interchangeable format. GML files are also used as data output files generated by Printed Circuit Board (PCB) CAD tools like Autodesk EAGLE. These GML files are made up of layout data that indicate the hole positions that need to be milled in a layer.
How to open GML files
You need a suitable software like Graph Editor to open a GML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GML file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GML files:
- Graph Editor by yEd
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GML files are often referred to as Graph Editor data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Game Maker (script) by YoYo Games LimitedGame Maker by is a program that allows the user to create computer games without needing to write a single line of code. The program allows for the integration of backgrounds, graphics, music, sound effects, and many other features, aimed at novice computer programmers. The GML files are used to create and store game scripts, functions, and modules written in the GameMaker Language. This file format is classified as Developer.
- Geography Markup Language (markup language file) by Open Geospatial ConsortiumGeography Markup Language is a modeling language for geographic systems, more specifically known as an XML grammar written in XML Schema. This language is supported by many programs such as Merkaartor and Canvas X. The GML file contains a variety of objects for describing geography including coordinate reference systems and topology. This file format is classified as Data.
- GraphletGraphlet is a TCL/TK based programming language for graph algorithms with user interfaces. This program is available for all modern operating systems, however, is currently no longer developed or supported. The GML files contain the graph drawing algorithms which are implemented primarily in C++, along with an STL based libraries. This file format is classified as Data. - NetRemote (XML-based configuration file) by PromixisNetRemote is a software used to control Promixis smart devices such as lights, speakers, or TVs via TCP/IP. It allows for bidirectional communication with no line of sight issues. The GML file contains the XML-based configuration data which is utilized by NetRemote. This file format is classified as Data.
GML file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the GML files looks like this:
GML is a very common file type and contains well-defined data in an established structure that can be read by various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all GML files are Geography Markup Language files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 310 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as xmlns, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, http://www.opengis.net, FeatureCollection xmlns and http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance. These files can be linked to building, parcels, imro, land, cadastral, registry, original and inspire.
- 20% of all GML files belong to Graphlet File Format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. A typical file size is 33 KB. The keywords graph, node, label, Creator "Mark, Newman and directed 0 are typical for these files. The file name karate.gml or dolphins.gml is characteristic of these files. Such files are related to football, polblogs, graph, polbooks, lesmis, netscience and power.
The remaining 20% of all GML files are files with no common format, often, for example, XML, Source, ZIP, config, set, comment, HEADER and switch. These files sometimes refer to dataset, danych, basisdata, parcela, administrative, buildings, network or plan. If you want to find out which format your GML file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .gml file to view".
Technical Data for GML File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Altium\Dxp.exe %1
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Dxp.exe
a gml language file is a special file format by yEd and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GML files
- Associate the GML file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open language files. Because only the current version supports the latest GML file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the yEd manufacturer website after an available Graph Editor update.
- To make sure that your GML file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GML file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
