Opening GPKG Files
The GPKG file type is primarily associated with QGIS.
What is a GPKG file?
These files hold geographic features with both vector and raster information in a single, self-contained package. This design supports spatial queries and indexing directly through SQL commands.

How to open GPKG files
You need a suitable software like QGIS to open a GPKG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GPKG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GPKG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GPKG files:
- QGIS
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GPKG files are often referred to as QGIS gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- GRAMPS (GRAMPS Data Package) by Don AllinghamThe GPKG file extension contains data files. The data files store the contents of the GRAMPS software’s data packages. GRAMPS translates to Genealogical Research and Analysis Management Programming System. It is a genealogy software which is open source and free. Gramps programming was developed using the Python programming language’s PyGobject library.
GPKG file format:
To view or edit GPKG files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the GPKG files:
The GPKG extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a defined GPKG format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 95% of all GPKG files are associated with GeoPackage files, which internally utilize the well-known SQL format. An SQL file contains a lightweight SQLite database, widely used in application development for storing application related data. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. GPKG files can be up to 11 GB in size, but are often around 110 KB - 370 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The keywords SQLite format 3 and GPKG are typical for these files. These files are often associated with gadm, data, zone, jakarta, boundaries, points, range, emissions, keluruhan, polygons and ultra.
- 3% of all GPKG files save the data in GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 3 MB with most files being between 1 KB and 5 MB in size. The files contain the following words: gpkg.
The remaining 2% of all GPKG files are different files with different signatures. They are often associated with graykey, logs, haedargogn, service, global, output, arkod, asgs, dead, deso or plus. If you want to find out which format your GPKG file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .gpkg file to analyze".
Technical Data for GPKG File Extension
a gpkg database file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GPKG files
- Associate the GPKG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database files. Because only the current version supports the latest GPKG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available QGIS update.
- To make sure that your GPKG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GPKG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
