IMA file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the IMA files looks like this:
The IMA extension is very commonly found and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 80% of all IMA files store the data in the DICOM file format. DICOM is short for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM files are used to store, exchange, and transmit medical images from radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy, but also personal data about the patient. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. IMA files can be up to 200 MB in size, but are often around 180 KB - 680 KB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as DICM and 1.2.840.10008.5.1.4.1.1.4. Such IMA files store data about adult, spine, head, abdomen, thorax, coronary, mars, brain and knee, and include person-related information.
- 3% of all IMA files are Distribution Media Format disk image files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 730 KB to 1 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MSDOS5.0. An example of a file name is disk1.IMA. Files like these have the following tags: entertainment, microsoft and pack.
All other IMA files (17%) have no uniform format, such as ImageMixer project. Files like these are sometimes linked to abdomenroutine, general, thoraxroutine, pelvis, localizer, catheterization or diagnostic. You can get all the details of your IMA file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .ima file to view this image" above.
