What is an IR file
FilExt.com note: When you encounter a IR file, check its internal content (for example, by opening it in a text editor or using a hex viewer) to determine which category it falls into. This can help you decide the correct application to open or work with it.
How to open an IR file
You need a suitable software like LIRC to open an IR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

IR file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the IR files:
The IR extension is quite commonly used. The file itself covers a large number of different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all IR files are Flipper Zero IR signals files. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are 170 bytes to 41 KB in size, with a median of 1 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Version: 1, Filetype: IR signals file, address, protocol, type: parsed, command and name: Power. The file name tv.ir or Remote.ir is characteristic of these files. Files like these have the following tags: samsung, epson, projector, universal and mydevice.
- 10% of all IR files have the same signature 04 F0 49 52. They consist of unreadable binary data. IR files are between 310 bytes and 5 KB in size. The keywords Unknown are typical for these files. A common filename is receiver2_1.ir. Files like these have the following tags: daikin, generic and sony.
The remaining 75% of all IR files are files with no common format, the following 13 formats exist: RAR, PDF, WordPerfect, ZIP, RIFF, UNA, FHrR, slir, class and AXIVIONIR. They are often associated with power, down, load, factory, aspire or petrel.
