What is a JPG file

JPG files mostly belong to Photos by Microsoft. JPG is a filename extension for image files coded using JPEG image compression standard. JPG files may be used to store photos, digital scans, thumbnails, or raster graphics created with various image processing software. The JPEG algorithm for encoding graphics data in JPG files is based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and this format supports about 16 million colors. JPEG also supports selectable compression ratios allowing raw image data to be compressed to 10:1 of the original file size without a significant reduction in quality. It is for this reason that most digital imaging devices, programs, and web applications have adopted JPG as the preferred image file format. Some image processing programs may use JPG files to store images coded in WEBP format. This kind of JPG files are RIFF containers for storing images and metadata.

How can I open a JPG file?

You need a suitable software like Photos to open a JPG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JPG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JPG file directly in the browser:. JPG file format:

To view or edit JPG files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the JPG files:

JPG is a very widely used file extension. The file type uses a well-defined format that can be read by many programs. But the following two file formats are common:

80% of all JPG files belong to JPEG bitmap. The files are using the common file format JPG. JPEG is the standard image format for lossy and compressed image data. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 16 KB to 2 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as JFIF and Exif. Such files sometimes refer to screenshot, image, logo, photo, images, android, download and chrome.
2% of all JPG files are based on the well-known RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 11 KB to 150 KB. The keywords WEBPVP8 and RIFF are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are IMG_20180601.jpg. These files can be linked to animated, pchoice, picture, sticker, thumb, pictureunlock, unlock and user.

The remaining 18% of all JPG files are different files with different signatures, the following 50 formats exist: Mac2OSX, PNG, ZIP, PDF, DOC, PSD, XML, GZIP and JFIF.
