Opening a LAYOUT File
The LAYOUT file type is primarily associated with Mainstage.
What is a LAYOUT file
- Adobe Mainstage: Saves layout settings for the interface and the color of Apple MainStage controls. These files also save other customization settings for the user interface.
- Code::Blocks, Adobe Premiere: The layout format is used to save workspace settings and store custom GUI setups.
- ColorBurst Overdrive: Uses the layout format to index data (such as images) which are included in ColorBurst projects. The file includes information regarding cropping, color correction, positioning and other data.
- LyX: Uses the format to identify and retrieve LyX templates (or document classes). LyX stores information as plain text in layout files. It uses the TeX/LaTeX syntax.
- Oracle Weblogic Portal: Uses the format to save store portal layout templates data. These files use XML to store portals controls and layout information.
- Several other software programs also use the layout format including Torchlight, DVD Studio Pro, TrueCafe Internet, CEGUI, etc.
How do you open LAYOUT files?
You need a suitable software like Mainstage to open a LAYOUT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LAYOUT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LAYOUT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert LAYOUT files:
- Mainstage by Apple
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. LAYOUT files are often referred to as Mainstage settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Premiere (user interface layout file) by AdobeAdobe Premiere, is a proprietary video editing software solution. It was first released in 1991 for the MacOS platform. The program features high resolution video editing up to a resolution of 10,240 × 8,192 pixels, 32-bits per channel color, in both RGB and YUV; sample-level editing for audio, support for VST (virtual studio technology) audio plug-ins , and 5.1 surround sound mixing. Premier uses the LAYOUT extension for files that store workspace settings and store custom GUI setups. This file format is classified as Settings. LAYOUT file format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the LAYOUT files:
The LAYOUT file extension is quite widespread and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all LAYOUT files internally use the ZIP format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one LAYOUT file. Primarily 7 to 70 files are included. File names inside are doc_thumbnail.png, document.xml, documentProperties.xml, references.xml, styleManager.xml and \pages\page1.xml. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. Most of these files are 22 KB to 18 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as document.xml. Files like these are sometimes connected to backup, plan, floor, spaceship, drawing, wall, elevation, lighting, kitchen, crooks, design and view, and usually contain person-related data.
- 10% of all LAYOUT files are Code::Blocks Workspace Layout files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The file size is in the range of 230 bytes to 17 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>, CodeBlocks_layout_file, File name, open, <FileVersion major="1" minor="0" />, top, <ActiveTarget name="Debug" /> and tabpos. The following filename is common: root.layout. Files like these have the following tags: account.
All other LAYOUT files (40%) have different formats, the following 9 formats can be found: Free42 Layout / skin, XML, config, FrameWidgetClass and resource. Often described as menu, details, loading, gamespage, dialog, house, panel or page. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your LAYOUT file!
