Opening LSL Files

The LSL file type is primarily associated with LiveSplit.

LSLFile Extension LSL
File extension: LSL
File type:  text-based file

What is an LSL file?

LSL files mostly belong to LiveSplit. LSL files are not a single file type but are used in different ways.
For one set, these files are XML-based configuration files that store layout settings such as timer designs and label templates. They are used with applications like LiveSplit for managing split or layout information and with the LightScribe Template Labeler for printing labels.

  • LiveSplit Layout File: Contains settings that determine how a speedrun timer is displayed. More details can be found at LiveSplit.
  • LightScribe Label: Holds template information for printing labels on compatible devices.

Another group of LSL files is based on the Linden Scripting Language used in virtual worlds such as Second Life. These are plain text files containing script code that controls behaviors and actions within a virtual environment. More information is available on the Second Life website.
How you open an LSL file depends on its role. Use a plain text editor or a specialized XML/code editor when modifying layout or script files.
Tips include:

  • Backup the file before making changes.
  • Use editors with XML validation or code syntax highlighting.
  • Test any script modifications in a safe environment.
  • How to open an LSL file

You need a suitable software like LiveSplit to open an LSL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LSL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LSL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert LSL files:

    1. LiveSplit
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. LSL files are often referred to as LiveSplit settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. Corel Paradox Saved Library
    3. Daylon Leveller Shape List
(3D geometry for heightfield vector objects)
    4. lightScribe Direct Disk Labeling (lightScribe Direct Disk Labeling) by HP - lightScribe Direct Disk Labeling
LSL refers to lightScribe label, a file representing an image that can be burned directly onto optical media namely CDs and DVDs. lightScribe optical media is specially coated, reacting to the laser beam that is usually used to read and write media to 'burn' an image onto a disc. This requires the use of a specific type of optical drive that supports lightScribe technology that is able to transfer LSL images to discs.
    5. Liquid Audio Player (Resource DLL) by Geneva Media, LLC
The Mime types used with this association are: audio/x-liquid-file. Program ID is LAplayer.la1.Document

How to solve problems with LSL files

    • Associate the LSL file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open text-based files. Because only the current version supports the latest LSL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available LiveSplit update.
    • To make sure that your LSL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
