What is an LZO file?

LZO files mostly belong to lzop by Markus F.X.J. Oberhumer. LZO is a file format that consists of files compressed using Lempel–Ziv–Oberhumer (LZO) algorithm.

• Features: LZO algorithm is a lossless compression algorithm whose compression capabilities while being comparable with GZIP, also deliver better compression ratio and decompression speed. If the file names of the soon to be compressed files are too long, lzop also truncates the file names before compressing them into an LZO file. By default, the original filenames, mode, ownership, and time stamps are saved in the LZO files. This data can be copied back when decompression takes place. English text files or source code files can be compressed to 40-50% of their original size when compressed into LZO file format.
• Adoption: lzop, which stands for Lempel–Ziv–Oberhumer package, is the official open-source software that can compress and decompress files to and from LZO format respectively.lzop functionality is very similar to that of gzip. When compared to the gzip tool, lzop uses about 10% of CPU to achieve similar outputs. Official lzop packages are available for Mac OS and Linux variants. Precompiled binaries exist for Windows and DOS-based systems.

How to open LZO files

You need a suitable software like lzop from Markus F.X.J. Oberhumer to open an LZO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LZO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LZO file directly in the browser:.
