What is a MAX file?
How to open MAX files
You need a suitable software like 3DS MAX to open a MAX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MAX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MAX file extension format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the MAX files produces the following result:
The MAX file extension is quite widespread and mainly uses a defined MAX format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all MAX files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a unique Windows component object identifier (CLSID) which is 1cdd8c7b-81c0-45a0-9fed-04143144cc1e. The file contains several sections which are named like DllDirectory, Scene, ClassData, Config, VideoPostQueue, SummaryInformation, ClassDirectory3, DocumentSummaryInformation, ScriptedCustAttribDefs, SaveConfigData and FileAssetMetaData3. Most of these files are 600 KB to 110 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such files are related to model, vray, uploads, cadnav, corona, chair, open and scene.
- 25% of all MAX files are PaperPort scanned document/image files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 32 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 240 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: ViGFk. Files like these are about scan, friday, monday, tuesday, thursday and sunday, and have often person-related content.
The remaining 5% of all MAX files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. PS2 PowerSave, ZIP, OrCAD and EXTM. The category is house, table, room, scanline, design or mesh. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your MAX file!

How to solve problems with MAX files
- Associate the MAX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d scenes. Because only the current version supports the latest MAX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available 3DS MAX update.
- To make sure that your MAX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MAX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
