Opening MDE Files

The MDE file type is primarily associated with ArchiCAD.

What is an MDE file

MDE files mostly belong to ArchiCAD by Graphisoft. An MDE file is an add-on (module) used by the educational version of ArchiCAD architectural design and BIM software. Unlike the educational version, standard versions of ArchiCAD save modules in MOD files. Another type of MDE file is a Standard Jet Database created by Access database management system. It contains a compiled version of an MDB database. Unlike MDB files, an MDE database does not contain editable sources.

How to open MDE files

You need a suitable software like ArchiCAD to open an MDE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MDE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MDE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MDE files:

  1. ArchiCAD by Graphisoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MDE files are often referred to as ArchiCAD plugins because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Access (data) by Microsoft
Access is a cross-platform relational database management system bundled with Office productivity software suite. Some versions save a compiled database in an MDE file. This file format is classified as Database.

MDE format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the MDE files:

The MDE file extension is used very often and mainly uses a special format. The file formats most commonly found in MDE files are:

The remaining 7% of all MDE files are different files with different signatures. You can get all the details of your MDE file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .mde file to analyze" above.

an mde module is a special file format by Graphisoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with MDE files

  • Associate the MDE file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open modules. Because only the current version supports the latest MDE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Graphisoft manufacturer website after an available ArchiCAD update.
  • To make sure that your MDE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .MDE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
