What is an MDW file?

MDW files mostly belong to Access by Microsoft. An MDW file contains workgroup information which is used to manage user access to databases created with the 2000 to 2003 editions of Access. The default MDW file generated by Access is named system.mdw. It is saved as a Jet System Database containing users, passwords, and privileges for each user with access to databases in a given Access installation.

How to open an MDW file

You need a suitable software like Access from Microsoft to open an MDW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MDW file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. The MDW file extension mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 75% of all MDW files are associated with Microsoft Jet DB Workgroup Information. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 77 KB to 380 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Jet System DB. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: ce32c5d8-3d8e-11d2-b09f-0800369f0e03. The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are Contents. MDW files are between 130 KB and 2 MB in size.
