Opening MIL Files
The MIL file type is primarily associated with AutoCAD Raster Design.
What is a MIL file?
When in this form, it stores image data for blueprints and other CAD projects. It is designed for work in programs like AutoCAD Raster Design.
- CALS Raster Image: This type holds technical drawing images in a well‐defined raster format.
- PCB Manufacturing File: In another use, the file works as a control file linked to the Gerber RS-274X standard for printed circuit boards. More info is available at Ucamco.
- Measurement/Layout Data: Some files carry layout or measurement details used in PCB design via Mentor Graphics PADS Layout. Details can be found at Siemens PCB Software.
- Alternative Formats: On occasion, a MIL file may look like a PDF, TIFF, or even a 3D metafile. This can serve military documents or technical imaging in another style.
FilExt.com tips: If you have a MIL file, check its origin. Some display best in CAD or PCB design applications. A simple text editor might also reveal header information to guide you.
How can I open a MIL file?
You need a suitable software like AutoCAD Raster Design to open a MIL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MIL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MIL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MIL file format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MIL files:
The MIL file ending is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all MIL files have the same signature srcdocid: . The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 26 KB to 490 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as srcdocid: NONE dstdocid: NONE. These files are often associated with vrasr.
- 10% of all MIL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "specversion:" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 220 KB and 390 KB in size. The files contain the following words: specversion: MIL-R-28002A 19901130 srcdocid: NONE.
All other MIL files (35%) have different formats, frequently e.g. PDF, TIFF, config and rnz. Tagged as export. Just click the "Choose your .mil file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your MIL file is.

How to solve problems with MIL files
- Associate the MIL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open raster graphics files. Because only the current version supports the latest MIL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available AutoCAD Raster Design update.
- To make sure that your MIL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MIL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
