What is a MOC file?

MOC files mostly belong to Live2D Cubism Editor. MOC files are used in several distinct software areas. They do not refer to one single format.

Live2D Models: Many MOC files store Live2D model data. This data is used with the Live2D Cubism Editor to animate characters. For more details, visit Live2D Cubism.

Qt Development Files: Some MOC files are generated by the Qt Meta Object Compiler. These files hold meta information for Qt’s signal and slot system and are used in Qt Creator projects.

How to open a MOC file

You need a suitable software like Live2D Cubism Editor to open a MOC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. The MOC file extension is used very often and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

45% of all MOC files have the same signature moc. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MOC files are between 89 KB and 580 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords PARAM_ANGLE_X, PARAM_ANGLE_Z, PARAM_ANGLE_Y, PARAM_EYE_L_OPEN, PARAM_EYE_L_SMILE and PARAM_EYE_R_OPEN are typical for these files. The file name model.moc is characteristic of these files. Files like these have the following tags: event, live, costume, kasumi, normal, remu, neptune, alexa, noire and vert.
30% of all MOC files start with the magic bytes MOCF, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MOC files can be up to 13 MB in size, but are often around 570 KB - 1 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: MOCF. An example of a file name is BI001195BAA.moc or DO000049BAA.moc.
