What is a MOM file?

MOM files mostly belong to Mindomo. MOM files can refer to different data containers based on the software that created them.
For many users, a MOM file is a Mindomo mind map archive. In this case the file is structured as a ZIP-compressed container that holds the nodes, links, images, and other data that form a mind map. Another use is in Apple development. MOM files here are compiled Core Data models used by Xcode. These files are typically stored in a plist format and are created by NSKeyedArchiver. How to open MOM files

You need a suitable software like Mindomo to open a MOM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The MOM extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The file formats most commonly found in MOM files are:

• 70% of all MOM files are based on the zip format, the MOM file contains a number of compressed files. MOM files contain from 1 to 6 compressed files. Customary file names are Document.xml, changes.json, document.json, nodes.json and themes.json. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. A typical file size is 17 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. json and Document.xml. • 25% of all MOM files are based on the popular plist file format. A property list file is a structured text file that contains user's settings or macOS apps configuration. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MOM files are between 1 KB and 24 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as bplist00, Troot, NSKeyedArchiver and X$versionY$archiverT$topX$objects. Files like these are sometimes connected to model, data, chat, notes, state and game.

All other MOM files (5%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. XML and LIST.
