What is an MPC file

MPC files mostly belong to Musepack MPC Player. MPC files serve different roles depending on the context in which they were created.
For most users, an MPC file is a compressed audio file encoded with the Musepack codec. This format was designed to deliver high-quality sound with efficient data compression. It is typically played using specialized software such as the Musepack MPC Player.
  • Audio Files: These contain compressed audio data. The Musepack codec, which is open source, provides efficient compression and improved performance over older audio formats.
  • Label Printer Files: A smaller group of MPC files use a ZIP-based structure. They store data for label printers or compressed MuseScore projects, created by tools like MPC Label Designer. More details can be found on the Phoenix Contact site.
  • Project or Playlist Files: A few MPC files are used as project files or playlists, such as those for CarveWright or Media Player Classic. Opening these files requires the appropriate software to view or modify the project data. More info is available on the CarveWright website.
  • Opening MPC Files: Check the file properties to see which type of MPC file you have. If it is an audio file, use a compatible media player. For label printer or project files, use the corresponding desktop application. This will ensure the file is opened correctly and its content is accessible.

How to open an MPC file

You need a suitable software like Musepack MPC Player to open an MPC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

    MPC file format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the MPC files:
