Opening an MSK File
The MSK file type is primarily associated with Microwind.
What is an MSK file?
Use cases include:
- Microwind Schematic: These files contain circuit layout designs and schematic data. More information is available at Microwind.
- Manuskript Project: Here the MSK file is a project container using ZIP compression that holds writing project data. Visit Manuskript for details.
- Image Mask: Used in image editing software like PaintShop Pro to store selection and mask layers. Check PaintShop Pro for more info.
- Voice Guide File: A format for storing audio instructions, referenced by VGU and Avaya Aura Messaging.
- Sea Ice Mask: This variant carries geographic mask data that outlines sea ice concentrations. See details at NSIDC.
- Binary/Raster Mask: A file holding a binary image mask used in data analysis, with ties to meteorological applications (NCEP).
- Embroidery Mask: Uses Microsoft Compound formatting to hold pattern details for embroidery designs.
- Signal Integrity Mask: Contains data for analyzing signal integrity, for example from instruments like the Agilent 86100 (Agilent).
FilExt.com tip: To work with an MSK file, open it in the specific software that created it or inspect its header to identify its structure. Each variant is built to serve a precise role in its field.

MSK file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the MSK files produces the following result:
The MSK file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all MSK files start with the bytes VERSION , which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. MSK files can be up to 100 KB in size, but are often around 710 bytes - 6 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. The following keywords are characteristic: FIG, VERSION, Users, SIMU #5.00, Desktop and microwind. These files can be linked to homework and gate.
- 10% of all MSK files are based on the zip format, the MSK file contains a number of compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 9 to 134 files. File names are e.g. MANUSKRIPT, infos.txt, labels.txt, plots.xml, settings.txt, status.txt, summary.txt and world.opml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are 5 KB to 30 KB in size, with a median of 14 KB. The keywords MANUSKRIPT3, infos.txt, summary.txt and status.txt are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to novel.
All the rest of the MSK files (65%) have different formats, often e.g. JFIF. These files are often connected to region, mask, base or skip. If you want to find out which format your MSK file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .msk file to view this image".
Technical Data for MSK File Extension

an msk mask file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MSK files
- Associate the MSK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open mask files. Because only the current version supports the latest MSK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Microwind update.
- To make sure that your MSK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MSK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
