What is an MSWMM file?

MSWMM files mostly belong to Movie Maker by Microsoft. MSWMM is the filename extension of movie projects created with Movie Maker, a discontinued Windows software used to create, edit, and share home movies. An MSWMM file does not contain actual media files; it only contains the paths to source files (videos, images, voice overs, and background music) used in the project. The MSWMM movie project may also contain user-defined slideshow settings for the movie. Initially, MSWMM movies could be burned to DVDs for distribution. Later versions of Movie Maker mainly exported MSWMM projects as H.264-encoded videos. Movie Maker was discontinued in 2017 and is no longer available for download. Photos, a video and image viewing/editing software for Windows allows users to create videos and movie projects similar to those created with Movie Maker.

How to open MSWMM files

You need a suitable software like Movie Maker from Microsoft to open an MSWMM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
