Opening an MW File
The MW file type is primarily associated with Maple.
What is an MW file?
How to open an MW file
You need a suitable software like Maple to open an MW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MW file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MW file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the MW files comes to the following conclusion:
The MW extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 90% of all MW files are Maple XML Worksheet files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The file size is in the range of 37 KB to 670 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, Version major, minor, <Worksheet>, <Label-Scheme value="2" prefix=""/>, autoexpanding_sections, <View-Properties presentation="true" and <View-Properties presentation="false". Files like these are about maple, math, assignment, solution, project, method, guide and exam.
- 2% of all MW files start with the magic bytes 6D 01 00 00 06 00 00 02 4D, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 2 KB to 34 KB in size. The files contain the following words: MONACO and Custom.
The remaining 8% of all MW files are files with no common format. Often described as introduction, optimization, fibonacci, unimodal, lecture, search, solver, class, apps or diff. If you want to find out which format your MW file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mw file to view".

How to solve problems with MW files
- Associate the MW file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open worksheets. Because only the current version supports the latest MW file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Maplesoft manufacturer website after an available Maple update.
- To make sure that your MW file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MW file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
