What is a NIB file

NIB files mostly belong to Xcode by Apple. A NIB file is a touch-enabled user interface object for an iOS app created by the Interface Builder component of Xcode integrated development environment. Such NIB files are usually generated by Interface Builder's Cocoa or Carbon interface. They contain elements such as buttons and text fields. Recent versions of Interface Builder have replaced NIB format with an XML-based XIB file. Another type of NIB file is a custom brush or pen nib used by some versions of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite.

How to open a NIB file

You need a suitable software like Xcode to open a NIB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NIB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NIB file directly in the browser:. NIB file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the NIB files produces the following result:

NIB is one of the most common file extensions and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all NIB files are associated with Apple Interface Builder NIB archive. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 3 KB with most files being between 960 bytes and 9 KB in size. It is a modern file type. The files contain the following words: NIBArchive. The following filename is common: runtime.nib or objects-13.0-.nib. Files like these are sometimes connected to view, controller, cell, uiview, table, screen, launch, window and phone.
• 40% of all NIB files are Apple Interface Builder Resource files, which are using the popular plist file format. A property list file is a structured text file that contains user's settings or macOS apps configuration. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 13 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as bplist00, objectsY, versionX, NSKeyedArchiver, X$versionY$archiverT$topX$objects and IB.systemFontUpdateVersion]IB.objectdata. A usual file name is MainMenu.nib. These files are often associated with menu, keyedobjects, preferences, list, registration and license.
