Opening NIF Files

The NIF file type is primarily associated with GameBryo.

NIFFile Extension NIF
File extension: NIF
File type:  3D model

What is a NIF file?

NIF files mostly belong to GameBryo by Gambase. Files that have NIF extension are usually 3D models created using GameBryo, a cross-platform game engine which has been used in the development of video games such as Skyrim and Fallout. The NIF 3D model typically contains meshes, shaders, terrains, objects, and rigged models for creating customized character models in a game. Netshift, a discontinued browser for Windows, stored "saved interface data" in files with NIF extension.

How to open NIF files

You need a suitable software like GameBryo to open a NIF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NIF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NIF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NIF files are often referred to as GameBryo 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. NetShift (saved interface data) by NetShift
NetShift was a PC utility with capabilities for using browsers like Internet Explorer as an engine to grant users secure Internet access. The NIF file used by NetShift was a binary interface file containing a configuration of objects for the NetShift Web Browser. This program is no longer available. This file format is classified as Settings. Related links: Netshift

NIF file format:

To view or edit NIF files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the NIF files is as follows:

NIF is one of the most common file extensions and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. But the following two file formats are common:

All the rest of the NIF files (11%) have different formats, frequently e.g. OS/2 Network Information File, GZIP and NDSNIF. Tagged as treepineforest, malebody, login, femaleupperbody, nvdlc, bdor, hair or head. Just click the "Choose your .nif file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your NIF file is.

How to solve problems with NIF files

  • Associate the NIF file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open 3d models. Because only the current version supports the latest NIF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Gambase manufacturer website after an available GameBryo update.
  • To make sure that your NIF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
