What is an NLM file?

NLM files mostly belong to Nokia LogoManager. Nokia Logo File Usage:

Nokia uses NLM files in its Nokia LogoManager system. These files hold logo graphics that the company manages within Nokia Multimedia Studio.

UMLS Data File Usage:

Some NLM files are actually ZIP archives containing UMLS data for use with tools like MetaMap. This set of files supports biomedical text processing. More details are available at the National Library of Medicine website.

How to open NLM files

You need a suitable software like Nokia LogoManager to open an NLM file. To view or edit NLM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the NLM files comes to the following conclusion:

The NLM file extension is not common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in NLM files are:

60% of all NLM files are Nokia Logo Manager bitmap files. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 260 bytes in size and range from 130 bytes to 2 KB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. NLM.
30% of all NLM files use the ZIP algorithm, multiple files are compressed and combined into one NLM file. Such a ZIP file contains 1 to 130 files with names like \2020AB\. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are often between 660 MB and 2 GB in size. The keywords META, gzUT and AMBIGSUI are typical for these files. An example of a file name is 2020ab-1-meta.nlm or 2019ab-1-meta.nlm. Such NLM files store data about meta and otherks.
