Opening a NOT File
The NOT file type is primarily associated with Composer.
What is a NOT file?
- Main Use: Notation Composer and Notation Musician software are useful in converting the audio from music files into sheet music, which can be used by musicians to smoothly recreate the musical renditions. The software take the song input usually in the form of MIDI files and convert them into sheet music files with the proprietary NOT file extension.
- Other Uses: Finale is another music notation software developed by MakeMusic, that uses NOT files. Finale software uses NOT files to store information from MIDI audio files that have been recorded from the Transcription Window in the software. NOT files can be created from the Finale software by selecting the HyperScribe tool, choosing Transcription Mode, choosing a music measure, clicking on wait Till, playing the audio file, selecting File → Save As, naming your file, choosing the save location on the computer and finally clicking on OK. NOT files are only supported by the Finale software that came before 2014. ActiveNote is a note-taking application that runs on Windows PCs and uses NOT files to store important information such as memos, events, and other reminders. e-Sword, a tool used in study bible books, also uses NOT files (as well as TOP files) to store e-books.
How to open a NOT file
You need a suitable software like Composer to open a NOT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NOT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NOT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
